I'm Gonna Change My Name

My mom had four children running around calling her Mom, on really hectic days, she would say she was going to change her name. I feel that way sometimes, but it is not my kids calling me mom that is the problem. And really, it's not the name I am called, it is the adjectives attached to it.

I am a Christian, a follower of Jesus of Nazareth. First of all, I reject the term fundamental Christian, because to follow Christ, you must hold certain fundamental beliefs. Non-believers and people who believe differently say that this is not the case. They claim Christianity is exclusionary because you are required to hold certain beliefs. This is like saying baseball is exclusionary if they won't let you play because you believe there should only be two bases and try to run home from second base.

There are many sects of Christianity, kind of like there are many flavors of potato chips. And like potato chips, some of them are good and some of them are not. I will not go into the different types of Christianity except to say that many do not display the attributes of Christ such as love, compassion, humility, patience, long-suffering, mercy, graciousness, gentleness, meekness, kindness, holiness, perfection, prayerful, submission, obedience,  joy, peace and sensitivity to others. This is why you will hear people say things like "they are not real Christians", because a follower of Jesus should not be bigoted, unloving or judgemental. I'm not saying we are perfect, but we try to practice the attributes of Christ. So if hate is being preached from the pulpit, we have to question the source.

Christians do not want to take over the world, and although we are commanded by our Lord and Savior to spread the Gospel to world, we can not, in and of ourselves, save you or convert you. That comes from God.

So next time you post a comment bashing Christians, please consider the following; does this person reflect the Christ he claims to follow? If not, chances are he is not a real Christian.

Everytime I read about hate, racism and politics associated with Christianity, I get depressed. Calling it a fairytale doesn't bother me as much as the adjectives used to describe the attitudes of those who claim to be Christians.

lost in America:

Amen sister !!!

It is the false believers who go and rant about the evil of the world and do not even see the evil they are doing, while condemning the true believers who do believe in Loving God more than anyone or anything else, then loving our neighbors as we love ourselves.

They hurt me deeply, not because I'm better than them, but because they don't see the damage they do in Christs Holy Name by blaspheming His Way with their: greed, politics, desire to be controlling, self righteous hypocrisy, sexual immorality, social conservatism based on their perceptions of God and His Way, ...

He said you will know us by our fruit. I want my fruit to be sweet and filling as He is, not biter and poisonous as they make their fruit.

Peace my friend.

Well done.

Remember Gandhi's statement - "I like your christ. I do not like your christians. They are so unlike your christ." I don't "believe" but I have no problem with those who follow the MESSAGE. Hopefully, they can separate the wheat from the chaff - the message from the DOGMA.

Cast aside the devotion to the DOGMA and those who spout it for their own ends. Do good things. Live life to the fullest because this is not a dress rehearsal.

Canary, if I had a nickel for everytime I heard this quote, I would be rich. But I understand what he was saying. Those who claim to be Christians do not mirror Christ.

This isn't really a super fair comparison. No ones soul is supposed to go to Hell if they miss out on some ball or choose not to play.

Also, if Christians could PROVE their assertions are true, then it wouldn't be a matter of being exclusionary. Until then, their is nothing more true about it than the thousands of other religions that exist - some of which have the same themes in them that Christianity stole or borrowed, depending on how you look at it.

In most dogmatic theistic religions, there is no room for another God. It's their God or none. It's a dangerous mindset IMO.

I am a Christian, a follower of Jesus of Nazareth. First of all, I reject the term fundamental Christian, because to follow Christ, you must hold certain fundamental beliefs.

You might have a point. Would Christian extremist be better?

This is why you will hear people say things like "they are not real Christians", because a follower of Jesus should not be bigoted, unloving or judgemental.

But see, that's how YOU interpret the Bible. Someone else can, indeed, find things in the Bible to justify almost anything, including cruelty, genocide, rape, slavery, suppression of women etc.

Good article, Lost. Glad you wrote it. Voted up.

Vlad's dog

here is why I get angry with some folks who try to spread the gospel

1. they do a very poor job of it

2. They consider an aggresive approach to be a good idea

3. The usually take a negative approach pointing out how others are weak and sinners

4. they use themsleves as a image of what a true or good christian is

To teach someone you must understand how to teach, spouting scripture at others is not a from of teaching, it is a form of self aggrandizement.

I wonder why folks consider spreading the 'good words' with angry voices.

Vlad, agree with you. I don't believe the gospel is to meant to be agressive.

This made me think of something that happened last Halloween. A woman that worked in the bakery of my grocery store told me her plans for Halloween. It involved a haunted house that depicted hell if you were not 'saved.' The crazy thing is she felt it was okay to go into detail with my small children next to me, and even invited me to come.

Um, no thanks. I plan on extorting candy from my neighbors with my kids.

I have never celebrated Halloween, much to my children's dismay. I never could see the point of scary costumes or movies. A child might be frightened by the concept of hell, especially if they don't understand the concept of salvation. I think I would have opted for candy, too.

A very well put article and I could not agree more. As a Christian I am called to be the light, people were drawn to Jesus not by what He said but how He lived. If people were drawn to Jesus the Christ. If we believe we are walking as He walked and people are pushed away we need to look at what is wrong with us not what is wrong with them. I heard a saying that has stuck with me, "There is something about that guy I do not like about myself"

We are to love God with all our being, if you truly love someone you will do what ever they ask. And God asks us to love one another. As a Christian if that love for one another is lacking you have a love problem with God.

Hiram:

I was doing some things I shouldn't have been doing one day years ago. I thought I was alright because I had confessed Jesus Christ as my Lord and Savior. So I thought He's good with it and I'll still go to heaven.

Then a small still voice said. Why do you call me Lord, yet ignore what I call you to do ?? I was heart broken and hurt, for I knew that I was a liar in the sense of the term Biblically- in that I said I knew Christ, but really didn't. It was just a convenient way to sin while feeling good about myself. All the while deluding myself into thinking I would still be acceptable, and worse yet leading others down the same path for my gain and their loss.-

I looked beside me and could see no-one, I checked my heart and knew that I was not near God, but that He was calling me back from where I'd wondered. Now I try to always remember that Christ is right next to me and what I do He can see. If it does not honor Him it is not right and I shouldn't do it.

I've found that walking with Him right beside me, tends to straighten me out pretty quickly when I look and see His perfection and my lack of it. No I'm not trying to say I'm perfect at all, but He is. So since He is where I want to be, I'll follow Him into the perfection He has for me.

Peace my friend.

I believe that all Christians experience His Presence when we are not living according to His will. There is a small nudging or tug when we stray that will not go away until we acknowledge Him.

Thanks for your kind comments, Hiram and CG.

Very cool CG, I was teaching a youth group and one of them ask me if going to a certain movie was the right thing to do. I asked him if he would be willing to buy Jesus a ticket to the movie. He got this depressed look on his face and then a smile and said thank you. Like you and that young man I am far from perfect but always endeavor to be a light. You are blessing to me my friend in all that you write. Thank you.

Am I the only person who has ever noticed the irony of Eve's sons names?

Can't, (Cain), and Able..... Why did the English language develop in such a way that key historical figures would be exact opposites, almost very nearly?

Nicely put, lost in America-3937007!

attributes of Christ such as love, compassion, humility, patience, long-suffering, mercy, graciousness, gentleness, meekness, kindness, holiness, perfection, prayerful, submission, obedience, joy, peace and sensitivity to others.

The above quote from the article says a lot! I'm thankful God doesn't expect perfection from us, and I appreciate God's patience as I seek to progress toward it.

I try to be very respectful of people's beliefs, especially since I openly do not ascribe to those beliefs, but I do take issue with this comment (though it was probably not intended to be the way I see it as an issue).

Christians do not want to take over the world, and although we are commanded by our Lord and Savior to spread the Gospel to world, we can not, in and of ourselves, save you or convert you. That comes from God.

I would have to say that 'converting' someone comes from within, not from god.

If I don't believe in god (I would consider myself more agnostic than atheist), then god isn't going to have a say in whether I am converted or not.

As I said, it was probably not intended to be read the way I read it, so please don't take this as an offence.

No offense, to clarify, I was saying that external pressure would not be a factor in salvation. It would be a desire from within.
