Speaking Our Mind

not-news, rhetoric, opinions

I have always been a reticent person and according to my children avoid conflict whenever possible. I have opinions, but I don't express them readily or vigorously and sometimes I wonder why people jump immediately to extreme positions spouting rhetorical nonsense without involving themselves in the discussion. Why can't we stop and consider another position before we state our opinion on the subject? Sometimes, people will do this without addressing the subject at all.

I have noticed recently, especially on the subjects of religion and politics, that the conversation jumps the fence and religious articles become political and the political subjects become about religion. I understand that this is primarily because religion has been drug into the realm of politics in the news, but is this really an excuse for individuals to make all political discussions about religion and vice versa?

I am not saying that you should not voice your opinion, but I frequently have to stop reading the comments on a seed because it has digressed into "I'm smarter than you", "no, you're not" contest. Yes, many of the articles are one sided, and yes we are each entitled to our own opinion, but posting one sided links to prove your point that the article is one sided is counter productive.

One of the best lines I have ever heard was in "The American President", when Andrew Shepard, the President said, "You want free speech? Let's see you acknowledge a man whose words make your blood boil, who's standing center stage and advocating at the top of his lungs that which you would spend a lifetime opposing at the top of yours. You want to claim this land as the land of the free? Then the symbol of your country can't just be a flag; the symbol also has to be one of its citizens exercising his right to burn that flag in protest."

Let's express our opinion, but let's do it with respect for the other guy.

The Vine is a great place to share information and express opinions, but if almost all of the discussions are one sided, we all lose.

COH please.

Grisham

I think you have a point. But I guess we make the Vine what it is and we each take away the value we can find here. As you travel around, you get to know the authors who at least try to write objective material.

Hope you keep writing, LA. You do a good job.

I agree with what you are saying, there are many good articles and discussions. It is just frustrating to see a good article and discussion derailed by personal animosity from either side.

Excellent refrence in the movie btw!!

I tend to do the same thing you do... scan through or skip when the conversations turn ugly. There is a lot of good on the Vine. Trust me...

As Grisham says... keep writing!

Thanks, ERirich. I'm just afraid I will miss a good comment when I leave a thread. But the personal vendettas frustrate me.

Yes, personal vendettas are bad.

I am always afraid I wll miss a good comment too... therefore my own seeds tend to be far and few inbetween.

It is indeed hard, if not impossible for many to allow others to express their strongly held opinions on religion and politics. I know...I'm one of them! My first reaction to strident comments on Newsvine is to respond with righteous indignation, and demand the commenter prove their views/accusations/assertions. However, I've also learned that if you ask those who enter a debate with bomb-throwing comments if they can back up their views/accusations/assertions in a calm, reasonable manner, you might get a calm, reasonable respons, but not often.

That's because the bomb-throwers (and we know them by their record) have no interest in constructive debate. Somewhere along the line, they've given up on constructive debate, and followed the poor examples seen here and elsewhere.

"Like begets like", and there are some long-time and strident members of this community that set a very poor example that unfortunately, infects others like an influenza virus.

AZ, I know it is hard. I guess getting drawn in is just human nature. And if unbiased proof exists of a statement, we would all love to have it, but most of the time "bomb-throwers" have a seriously compromised version of the "truth".

      Thanks for your comment

I'm not saying we should not express ourselves, I was talking about the petty squabbles that occur that have no point. Freedom of expression is one of the great things about the U.S. Even if we disagree, we have the right to express ourselves. Thanks for stopping by and commenting.
